The Family Grave Tender
Jeff Schnabel -
John Schnabel was my dad, and, for us, he was the family grave tender. For both family and friends in need, he would faithfully tend to the grave sites. Every spring, he would go out and clean the head stones, trim the site and leave it tidy and neat so that when family members came to visit, it would be nice.
On holidays and special occasions, he would return, clean things up and leave mementos of the day. Flags for the Veterans, plants during the summer months and wreaths at Christmas time. On father's day, his dad always received a visit and a coin for good luck. His mother got flowers for mother's day and he made a beautiful cross to grace their grave site with 'Gramps' engraved across the front and 'Gram' down the middle.
Sadly, we lost dad in the summer of 2014. We have been left to carry on his work. Dad was retired for over 18 years and it was at about that time that he began taking care of the family grave sites. Recently retired myself, I find that the task of tending the graves is very rewarding. Looking for a way to supplement my retirement fueled my decision to make this a business. This is how Buffalo Grave Tenders was born.
